Problem

When the children had classes at EF (English First), to build the children's independence, the parents were not allowed to participate with them. Thus, EF wanted to provide a way to help the parents track and view the learning progress, and they wanted the function to be embedded in their existed App-Small Star. - The new function needed to be easy to access and use without affecting the existed functions. - The App was designed for children to read and watch. As new functions joining, how to keep it fun and attractive for the children to interact with while also have accessibility for the adults to use.

Solution

To bridge the gap between children’s independent learning and parents’ need for involvement, we designed a dedicated parent dashboard within the existing Small Star App. I created a visually distinct but seamlessly integrated entry point—a small icon placed in the top corner of the homepage, clearly visible to adults but not intrusive to children. - The parent dashboard featured progress summaries, learning milestones, and behavior badges, using simple visualizations and warm, child-friendly graphics to maintain consistency with the app’s tone. - To protect the child-focused experience, we implemented parental authentication and subtle transitions, ensuring a clear context switch between child and parent views. - The design process involved co-creation workshops with both parents and educators, ensuring the UI met expectations around clarity, privacy, and emotional resonance. The result was a smooth integration of the new feature that enhanced parental engagement without disrupting the app’s core user base—children.
